How the race is panning out

Trump is currently ahead on 277 electoral votes, while Harris is leading on 224. A candidate needs at least 270 electoral votes to win the presidency. This election was seen as one of the most consequential in recent US history.

Trump, who served as the 45th president from 2017 to 2021, becomes the first US President to return to the White House for a non-consecutive term after a century. He lost to Joe Biden in the 2020 election. Harris has been vice president since January 2021.

A few key battleground states, including Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, decided the race. But Trump swept through most of the swing states, securing his victory with a few states still to declare results.
